On April 9, 2025, WordPress.com introduced a new AI-driven website builder designed to help users create fully functional websites through an interactive AI chat interface. This new feature is offered free of charge to WordPress users, targeting entrepreneurs, freelancers, bloggers, and others looking to establish a professional online presence quickly and easily.
While the AI builder currently supports the creation of basic websites, it does not yet accommodate more advanced sites such as e-commerce stores or those requiring complex integrations. Despite AI website builders no longer being novel, WordPress aims to enhance its competitiveness against platforms like Squarespace and Wix, which also provide AI tools to accelerate website creation and design.
Users interact with the AI builder by chatting with a chatbot, providing text and image prompts to customize the site’s design and layout. To begin, users enter a detailed prompt describing their website concept—for example, “build a website for my coffee shop”—including the site name, brief description, and content details.
After inputting the prompt, users can register or log into their WordPress account and watch as the AI constructs the website. WordPress notes that this feature currently only supports the creation of brand-new websites. Once the site is generated, users can continue modifying it through AI chat or manual adjustments.
The AI builder allows up to 30 free prompts before requiring users to select a hosting plan. All hosting plans include unlimited prompts, enabling users to try the AI builder before committing to hosting with WordPress.com.
The AI technology behind the builder combines self-hosted open-source models with externally hosted models to deliver its capabilities.
To publish the completed website publicly, users must choose a hosting plan, with pricing typically ranging from $48 per year for personal sites to $300 per year for business sites. WordPress.com specifies that AI builder users must select between the Premium plan at $96 per year and the Business plan. These plans include storage, a free domain for one year, premium themes, and customer support, with no additional fee for using the AI builder.
This launch reflects WordPress.com’s ongoing commitment to simplifying website creation and empowering users with AI-enhanced tools.
