The fierce competition between Boeing and Northrop Grumman/EADS over a $35 billion Air Force tanker contract has spilled into the blogosphere, where supporters of both aerospace giants are waging a spirited—and often humorous—online battle.
Pro-Boeing blog Tanker War Blog has been actively criticizing Northrop’s bid, recently highlighting an insider trading investigation involving former EADS Co-CEO Noel Forgeard—complete with satirical cartoons. Not to be outdone, Northrop backers have launched Tanker Wankers, which promptly took aim at its rival, accusing the Boeing-aligned site of bias and labeling it a “fiction machine.”
Adding to the drama, Tanker War Blog is running a poll asking whether the Government Accountability Office (GAO) should overturn the current contract decision favoring Northrop. So far, the “no” votes are leading. Meanwhile, “TAnchorman,” a spin-off of the pro-Boeing site, has stirred the pot further with a contest to rename Northrop’s KC-45 tanker. Leading entries include The DeGaulle Bladder, The French Fly, and Scarebus—a nod to Airbus’s European origins.
In unrelated but equally quirky news, Disneyland’s Toy Story-themed Mr. Potato Head promotion continues to flood mailboxes, with recipients receiving individual pieces—like his mouth—in separate boxes, sparking amusement (and some environmental concerns).
Finally, congratulations to Heather Holloway, winner of the “Best Fake Blog” contest for her parody of former Countrywide CEO Angelo Mozilo. A Fake Jane mug is on its way to her!
