Google AI Overviews Expand Again & Lead To 10% Query Growth

by jingji17

Google has officially rolled out its AI Overviews feature to over 200 countries and territories, supporting more than 40 languages, including Arabic, Chinese, Malay, and Urdu. The expansion, announced at Google I/O, follows weeks of testing and leaks, confirming earlier speculation about the feature’s wider release.

Hema Budaraju, Vice President of Product Management for Search, revealed that AI Overviews has led to a notable uptick in user engagement. “AI Overviews is driving over a 10% increase in search usage for queries where the feature appears,” she said. “What’s particularly exciting is how this growth compounds over time as users become more accustomed to the tool.”

When pressed for specifics on click-through rates and site traffic—particularly whether AI Overviews impacts publisher visits—Budaraju declined to share data but acknowledged feedback would be passed to the team.

Underpinning the upgrade is Gemini 2.5, Google’s latest AI model, now powering AI Overviews in the U.S. to handle more complex queries. The same model also fuels AI Mode, recently expanded to all U.S. users.
