San Francisco, CA – Former NFL quarterback and civil rights activist Colin Kaepernick has joined Medium’s board of directors and will publish a blog on the platform focused on combating anti-Black racism and advancing civil rights, the company announced Thursday.
Medium CEO Ev Williams, a Twitter co-founder, said Kaepernick’s partnership will amplify Black voices in media. “We’ve been in discussions for some time and look forward to leveraging his perspective as both a partner and leader,” Williams stated.
Kaepernick will contribute to Momentum, a new Medium blog addressing systemic racism, while conducting interviews with activists, athletes, and prominent figures. His content will explore racial justice issues in America.
“I’m excited to elevate Black voices in publishing and create opportunities for Black creators through this role,” Kaepernick said in a statement.
The 32-year-old free-agent quarterback gained national attention in 2016 for kneeling during the U.S. national anthem to protest racial injustice and police brutality—a demonstration that sparked widespread debate and effectively ended his NFL career. Following George Floyd’s killing in 2020, the NFL apologized for its initial response to player protests.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has since expressed support for Kaepernick’s return to the league, stating he would “encourage” teams to sign him. Kaepernick, who led the San Francisco 49ers to the Super Bowl in 2013, remains unsigned.
Medium’s collaboration with Kaepernick underscores its commitment to social justice storytelling. His first pieces are expected to debut in the coming weeks.
