The pandemic has triggered a dramatic shift toward freelancing, with 59 million Americans—39% of the U.S. workforce—now working independently, according to a new Upwork study. The global freelancing platform’s data reveals a 12-month surge in professionals leaving traditional jobs for flexible, often higher-paying opportunities.
Why Freelancing Is Booming
Upwork’s seventh annual Freelance Forward report, surveying 6,000 U.S. adults, identifies key drivers: the mass transition to remote work, companies increasingly hiring freelancers for specialized skills, and workers discovering greater earning potential. Notably, 75% of those who quit full-time jobs to freelance now earn equal or higher income.
“We’ve completely separated ‘where’ we work from ‘what’ we work on,” said Upwork CEO Hayden Brown. “Businesses now rely on freelancers to dynamically scale capabilities with demand—a trend that’s here to stay.”
Skilled Freelancers in Highest Demand
Half of all freelancers now provide professional services—up from 45% —with tech, marketing, and financial roles dominating high-earning opportunities. Upwork’s data shows freelancers are also upskilling faster, with 59% completing training in the past six months versus 36% of traditional employees.
