SAN FRANCISCO — Uber CEO Travis Kalanick has ordered an independent review following a former employee’s public allegations of systemic sexual harassment and gender bias at the ride-hailing giant. The probe, led by former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, comes in response to a blog post by ex-Uber engineer Susan Fowler, who detailed misconduct during her year at the company.
In a company-wide email late Monday, Kalanick announced that Holder and Tammy Albarran, partners at law firm Covington & Burling, will investigate Fowler’s claims and broader diversity issues at Uber. They will be joined by Uber board member Arianna Huffington, Chief Human Resources Officer Liane Hornsey, and Associate General Counsel Angela Padilla.
Fowler’s blog, published Sunday, described repeated sexual harassment by a manager and an ineffective HR response. She also alleged a culture of gender discrimination, citing organizational barriers to career advancement for women.
Kalanick acknowledged concerns about gender diversity, revealing that women make up just 15.1% of Uber’s engineering, product management, and scientist roles—a figure unchanged in the past year and lagging behind peers like Facebook (17%) and Google (19%). He pledged to release a full diversity report in the coming months.
“I believe in creating a workplace where a deep sense of justice underpins everything we do,” Kalanick wrote, calling the review a priority to “heal wounds” and set higher standards.
Huffington and Hornsey will host employee listening sessions, starting with an all-hands meeting Tuesday. The review is expected to proceed swiftly, though no timeline was specified.
Uber, already under scrutiny for its corporate culture, faces mounting pressure to address workplace equity as it navigates the fallout from Fowler’s claims.
