WordPress.com, a leading hosting platform, introduced a new AI-based website builder that allows users to create fully functional websites through an interactive AI chat interface. This feature is offered free of charge to WordPress users and primarily targets entrepreneurs, freelancers, bloggers, and others seeking to establish a professional online presence.
At present, the AI builder is limited in scope and cannot create more advanced sites such as e-commerce stores or websites requiring complex integrations.
While AI website builders are not new to the market, this addition aims to strengthen WordPress’s competitiveness against platforms like Squarespace and Wix, which also offer AI tools to accelerate site creation and design. However, as with most current AI builders, advanced site editing and layout customization still require familiarity with traditional web development tools. The company anticipates that as AI learns from user modifications over time, this limitation may gradually diminish.
Users interact with the new tool by chatting with an AI bot, designing their websites with personalized text and images, and configuring the layout conversationally.
The process begins with users entering a prompt that describes their website idea—for example, “Build a website for my coffee shop.” WordPress recommends that users provide detailed information, including the site’s name, a brief description, and the type of content the site will feature.
Afterward, users can sign up or log in to their WordPress accounts to watch the AI build their site. This functionality is currently available only for brand-new websites. Once the website is generated, users may continue modifying it through AI chat or make manual adjustments as needed.
The AI builder offers 30 free prompts per user. Beyond that, selecting a hosting plan grants unlimited prompts, allowing users to experiment with the AI builder before committing to hosting on WordPress.com.
Publishing the final website requires choosing a hosting plan. Prices range from $48 annually for personal sites to $300 annually for business websites. These plans include allocated storage, a free domain for one year, premium themes, customer support, and more. The AI builder is included free with all hosting plans.
